Elmgreen & Dragset: The Hive

Art

The artwork "The Hive" by Elmgreen & Dragset was mounted on the ceiling of the Moynihan Train Hall. Particular attention had to be paid to the weight of the 91 buildings. For this reason, they are made of powder-coated aluminum and plastic. Some of the buildings are also clad with mirror-polished surfaces.

All of these 91 buildings are designed differently and all are illuminated from the inside. We also supplied all the LED lighting for the artwork.

It was very important to the artists to incorporate fine details, such as antennas or flashing LED accents on the roofs of the buildings.

Pictures from the workshop: how The Hive was created

This project started right at the beginning of the Covid period, which is why you can see the masks in the pictures.

Here you can see the managing directors of Steelworks and the artists in the middle of the 91 different buildings.

The two artists Elmgreen & Dragset are already enthusiastic about the creation process.
